Laminate Care
& Maintenance

Laminate flooring offers an attractive and durable option for homes and businesses. To ensure that your laminate floors continue to look their best and withstand daily wear and tear, proper care and maintenance are essential. Follow these helpful tips for laminate care and maintenance:

Regular Cleaning:

  • Sweep or vacuum your laminate floors regularly to remove dust, dirt, and debris. This prevents the accumulation of particles that can scratch or dull the surface.
Use a soft-bristle broom or a vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment to avoid scratching the laminate.

Damp Mopping:

  • Occasionally, damp mop your laminate floors using a well-wrung mop or a microfiber mop. Use a mild laminate floor cleaner specifically designed for laminate flooring. Avoid excessive moisture on the floor, as it can cause warping or damage. Ensure that the mop is only slightly damp, and wipe up any excess moisture immediately.

Spill Cleanup:

  • Clean up spills promptly to prevent staining or damage to the laminate. Blot the spill with a soft cloth or paper towel, starting from the edges and working your way towards the center.
Avoid using excessive water or harsh chemicals, as they can seep into the seams and damage the laminate.

Protection from Scratches:

  • Place felt pads or furniture coasters under the legs of your furniture to prevent scratches when moving or rearranging items.
Use mats or rugs in high-traffic areas, such as entryways or under chairs, to minimize the risk of scratches from foot traffic.

Avoid Excessive Wear:

  • Place doormats at entrances to trap dirt and grit, which can cause scratches and wear on the laminate.
Consider using chair mats under rolling chairs or casters to protect the floor from damage.

Sun Protection:

  • Protect your laminate floors from prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, as it can cause fading and discoloration.
Use curtains, blinds, or UV-protective window films to reduce the amount of sunlight reaching the laminate.

Regular Maintenance:

  • Inspect your laminate floors regularly for any signs of damage, such as scratches, chips, or worn areas. Address these issues promptly to prevent further deterioration.
Avoid using abrasive cleaners, wax, or polish, as they can leave a residue or damage the protective layer of the laminate.

By following these laminate care and maintenance tips, you can enjoy beautiful and long-lasting laminate flooring. If you have any specific questions or need further guidance on laminate care, our knowledgeable team at Choice Companies is ready to assist you.

Laminate FAQ's

Laminate flooring is usually designed with interlocking planks, for ease of installation. Laminate can be “floated” over almost any subfloor, installed over a padded underlayment that sits between the subfloor and the laminate planks or tiles. This method requires no glue, nails or staples. Some laminate floors have a built in underlayment.  Most manufactures have installation instructions on specific products. It’s best to follow their guides, and that will meet their installation guide lines to qualify for manufacturer’s warranty.

Laminate flooring offers home owners the look of real wood at a more affordable price. Most laminate is also more durable than wood, better at resisting dents and scratches. In addition, laminate can be installed in rooms of the house where hardwood floors are not an option, such as in a bathroom or basement. Not all laminate flooring is 100% water resistant. Check with the manufacturer with specifications on water resistance.

This will largely depend on the quality of the flooring. Not all laminates are created equal. But, a high-quality laminate floor, with proper care and maintenance can last many, many years. There are laminate flooring that has built in wear and stain protection that will improve the lifetime of the floor.

Generally speaking, laminate can be installed in any room in the home. It can also be installed over a wide variety of subfloors, including wood, tile, ceramic, concrete and more. For the best results, install over a underlayment product that is over a subfloor. Installing it correctly will improve the lifetime of your flooring.

Laminate flooring is a man-made product, designed to look like a natural material, such as wood, stone or tile. It’s made by fusing together four, thin layers with different properties, resulting in an attractive, durable flooring option.

Laminate 101

Laminate is one of the most versatile floor coverings on the market today. It captures the sophisticated beauty and design of the finest natural hardwood, ceramic tile, stone and concrete, yet at a fraction of the cost. Laminate offers many great features and benefits that you’d wouldn’t expect in so affordable a flooring option – textured surfaces, trend-setting styles, easy care, scratch and stain resistance, durability . . . just to name a few!

Laminate floors offer the greatest variety of styles, including surface textures, thickness and installation method.

Surface Textures

Smooth – A smooth finish with a soft gloss lets the natural beauty of the floor’s decorative surface take center stage. Embossed-in-register printing also intensifies the depth, texture and natural look of the floor.

Texture – The laminate planks have a rough texture that gives the impression of gently aging. Surface treatments, such as deep graining, hand scraping and rustic character marks, an be seen and actually felt.

Board Thickness

Laminate flooring thickness is measured in millimeters (mm) with 7mm, 8mm, 10mm and 12mm being the most popular. The more even and sound your sub-floor, the thinner your laminate board can be.

Laminate Installation

Laminate floors are typically installed as floating floors, meaning boards are not nailed, stapled or glued to the subfloor. They simply lock together and float above the sub-floor as a unit. A tongue and groove locking system holds boards firmly in place so they remain secure once installed.

Laminate flooring’s unique construction allows it to perform superbly in any area of your home, even moisture prone basements and bathrooms. Anywhere you want to enjoy the beauty of natural hardwood, ceramic tile or stone, laminate can recreate the look convincingly. Laminate is remarkably durable and will able to stand up to heavy foot traffic, pets and kids, so it’s perfect for family rooms and foyers, hallways and home gyms.

The versatility of laminate also allows it to be installed directly over various existing floors, including wood, concrete, ceramic tile, vinyl and even carpet. Never worry about tearing up old flooring or dealing with the mess of repairing a damaged subfloor. As long as your subfloor is structurally sound, dry, clean, and flat, laminate has you covered.

Laminate’s tough wear layers also provide superior moisture resistance from surface spills while its moisture barrier backing guards against warping from subfloor moisture. While laminate floors are highly water resistant, they’re not waterproof. Make sure to wipe up any spills as soon as they happen.
